Let's say I have an Early Sherman with "Sherman Platoon" on it, and I draw a "Damage Equipment" as an effect of a Critical Hit. Do I have to discard it?

If it is your only upgrade card, yes. If you have more than one option, the defender chooses which to discard. The crit effects any card with the upgrade lable, but not Crew, and Injured crew works the same way.
