My take would be:

The idea is that we are never going to beat the panther on speed so it's firepower were going for and unlike the panther we don't rely on other tanks for buffs so the priests can hide and the panther has to go after the Pershing meaning whilst it will undoubtedly get first shot, it has to expose itself to the Pershing's return fire augmented by the observer empowered priest shot.
What do we think?
