According to this link, battlefront is retiring it's Flames of War and Team Yankee forums in favor of Facebook pages for discussion: https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=5964Combined with the recent appearance of the official TANKS - The WWII Tank Skirmish Game Facebook Group, this seems to be an option they are considering here as well. https://m.facebook.com/groups/714311132107137My personal feelings are that Facebook groups function like chatrooms, with a focus on a stream of newer content than a healthy discussion of a few threads. Persistence is hard to track, and difficult to search. Can you imagine answering the old questions "does shooting a tank from behind do more damage," or "can a tank move backwards as fast as it goes forwards," every week without referencing a thread where this had been answered already, or collecting PDFs across multiple months over several, scattered update posts? I've seen games do this before, and while reaching a wider audience more conveniently looks inviting, the overall increase in turnover due to frustration is not. Both venues are better at one thing, and worse at the other, and a balanced approach serves everyone better, despite the workload. If this decision is already made or out of your hands, Sean and Andrew, I understand, this is just one tanker's opinion. Everyone else, take a look and let them know what you think, if they'll approve you. And as always, the discussion will continue here, as long as it's able.

Some interesting points there.
Earlier this week, I PM'd Sean regarding the spam problem and, from the reply he sent me, it seems like this is the way they are wanting to go. Personally, although I have joined the Facebook page, I'm not a big fan of them as there is little structure as the most recent responses are the ones at the top of the page.
While Facebook, et al, are good for passing information on quickly, I feel it doesn't allow the in depth discussion that a forum allows. This is more the case when rule interpretation is the mastter under discussion.
I've PM'd you with some further thoughts on the subject. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Well. I don't use Facebook as a rule, so that'll basically mean an end to my involvement with the Tanks community. I know I won't be alone in that. This seems like it'll fix none of the problems with GF9's interactions with its customers. Questions will be asked more and answered less, it'll be harder to find resources that are already hidden, and they'll be sweeping major problems like misprints, mis-packaged product, and flat out missing event support under the rug. Unless GF9 fundamentally improves the quality of support for both the game and the community it will not survive. I'd remind them that the "monthly" event support has just released its eleventh month of content as the game enters its third year.

Don't like using Facebook for things like this.
You seem to need to spend your life on it to keep up with the stream of postings and being of sound mind and no longer a "youth" I actually have better things to do than constantly browse or trawl through an interminable number of updates.
It's just too much effort, whereas a forum with sections is so much easier to use. |

I see this move as unfortunate. I'm also not a Facebook user - signed up just to stalk someone who wasn't delivering on their Kickstarter (but was distributing elsewhere). :-)
Granted I haven't been a big contributor here but do have some ideas for some scenarios, planning to write them up as AAR's - I'll post them to BGG, not Facebook.

A switch to Facebook would be unfortunate. I check these forums daily. Facebook, not so much. Here, there can be discussion, a repository of rules/scenarios/etc that can be searched, and groupings by General/OP/Rules/etc that is useful. FB seems to be spewing of current thought with no flow to it. GF9, please keep the Forum. Edited by user Wednesday, February 21, 2018 12:25:11 AM(UTC)

Well, there it is; the death knell. https://m.facebook.com/groups/71...k&id=718410088363908This post confirms that the plan is to burn the site and do all of their consumer interaction via Facebook, which sounds like a genuine nightmare to anyone who is familiar with the venue. Judging by the absence of Chris on the forums, it's likely that nothing discussed, learned, or clarified here will be referenced or saved, so I call upon you all to back up important information before it inevitably vanishes. Sean, Andrew: thank you for your help, here. Good luck, folks.

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that we hear you. The Forums have become something that we just don't have the manpower to maintain well. I understand that some people don't want to do the Facebook thing, and that is understandable. If any of you have the time to create and run a Player Moderated TANKS forum let me know and I would be glad to participate and even share a link to it on the Facebook page for those who want to engage on a forum over facebook. We can't let the Spam bots win and kill one of the best communities of players on the web.

Honestly I think the better place for the persistent community would be the page for the starter kit on boardgamegeek: https://boardgamegeek.co...tanks-panther-vs-shermanIntegrated forums, ability to upload files, doesn't seem to suffer from spam issues, and isn't owned by Zuckerberg. What's the downside? |

Bump. Don't want this discussion to get lost.
I think that the majority of my posts have been topic bumps now. Not a spammer, I swear :D |

Just a friendly neighbourhood BUMP. EDIT: Instead of bumping two threads, I'll just link the Misprints thread in my signature. Edited by user Wednesday, February 28, 2018 2:39:30 AM(UTC)

Bump again.
Not that I don't like all the "Black Magic Specialist" and "Love Problem Solution", I just think this is more important. |

I keep putting it off Jeta2112 but I'll be registering for your forum when I get the chance. I'll have to check out boardgame geek later too. I like having actual forums to lurk around in. This was always a daily stop for months and finally shed my guest name to be here at the end I guess. I've always appreciated reading all the expertise here though! |

What's the downside? Already registered there, same name - Tenente. Hope to see more members there, as it seems a bit quiet on the Western Front. I'll be putting up my battle report from this forum to that one, plus, I'll try to copy the thread I have with Italian CV33 discussions we had. All of this to preserve the interesting discussions, we may have interest in copying some other threads to preserve them for history should this forum be knocked down. |
